A TEENAGER was arrested by police firearms officers after reports of a man wielding a large kitchen knife.

Police in Warminster attended an incident in Sambourne Road at about midnight on Saturday after it was reported that a man was waving a knife around in a threatening manner.

A 16-year-old from the local area was arrested on suspicion of possessing a bladed weapon and affray.

Acting Inspector Dave Minty, of Warminster and Westbury police, said: “If you take a knife out you have got to expect to be challenged robustly by the police.

“We don’t know what the intentions are and we have to treat it accordingly.”

Can I make it plain that I totally disassociate myself from the remarks made by others using a similar name to myself be they Hawker, McHawker, Hawker-Singh, Balker, Stalker, Hawkersby, Hawkersly or Walkersby.

Parents are too easily blamed these days. Admittedly there are some parents who couldn't give a monkey's about what their children are up to or what time they will be home at night. But the majority do care; however we live in a society now where kids watch too much TV and sit in front of the Playstation or X-Box and think it's cool to imitate what they see on the screen. With the best will in the world it is extremely difficult to keep tabs on your child 24/7, and the fact they have slipped a knife into their pocket before going out isn't exactly difficult so how is a parent supposed to see it? I would like to make it clear that in no way am I condoning this person carrying a knife around town and waving it about, or anyone else for that matter. But to suggest that you fine the parents, in my opinion, is rather hap-hazard and will not solve the ongoing problem this country is facing. Sadly it seems to be a growing popularity to protect yourself by carrying a weapon, and I believe that it is not solely down to the parents but for all adults - police, schools, friends, relatives etc - to educate the younger generation that it isn't "cool" to carry one. Gone are the days of just using fists, now you have to be wary of not only that but guns, knifes, iron bars and a whole host of different weapons. The Government need to come down hard on the offenders, as ultimately it's the person carrying the weapon who is to blame for taking it out - not the unaware parents.
